Massive disappointment

Setting and building are lovely. Room was spacious and clean with a nice sitting area . Beds comfortable.

Disappointing experience and absolutely not worth the money (over 700 dollars a night). Food was very poor. Evening bento box was billed as gourmet and illustrated on website as such but what got produced was like a bad TV dinner... and stone cold unless you were there when they put it out... nobody tells you to be there at 5.30. Staff was pleasant but amateur... no extra effort or anticipation of guests needs. Gardens of hotel, which apparently were previously lovely, were a mess with broken furniture, hose pipes strewn around, poorly maintained paths and unfinished building work. Garden furniture heaped untidily at the front of the building. Deck unaccessable... a shame as the birdlife was good and it would have been nice to watch them from there. Will not return.

Property was beautiful, if staff was more attentive it would have been excellent.

The property was beautiful

Service was poor. No follow through, tried to get a massage asked multiple times for a massage. The day before we went there no follow through. Breakfast service was poor. Vegetarian asked for bacon 🥓 n the side that came with meal to give to mother. Very specific about this and bacon came on top of their meal. Room was above kitchen could hear workers talking in room.

Peaceful Retreat on the Mendocino Coast

We had a wonderful first stay at Brewery Gulch Inn with our family of four. The location is absolutely beautiful and incredibly peaceful, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. The staff was genuinely friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The food was excellent, with every meal fresh and delicious. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and we would definitely recommend Brewery Gulch Inn to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway on the Mendocino Coast. We look forward to coming back!

Did not disclose construction and lack of follow through

We have stayed here many times over the years and while I saw the recent critical reviews, we wanted to return. I wish we didn’t. The major problem was construction that was not disclosed. The front desk made an excuse that the owner had just decided so they couldn’t have disclosed at time of booking. Then they should have reached out or discounted the room. Construction lasted throughout the day on deck and there was a saw right under our deck. Part of the reason for booking a property like this is to be able to relax on your deck, maybe take a nap. That was impossible. The remainder of things that went wrong were more minor in comparison and if it were only one or two, than not worth mentioning but in total really highlight the lack of attention to detail or ability to follow through. For the price I would expect excellent service. -Did not response to rate inquiry before stay -made pre arrival arrangements for massages and picnic. Said they would confirm and did not. We were able to confirm once we got there, but given they said they would confirm before, we didn’t know if we would be able to have those services. - out of the same breakfast items all 3 days. Given French toast was only sweet option, they should have subbed something in. -our toilet backed up. This was resolved but gross. - the room walls are very thin, we could here constant coughing and snoring from other room. -gratuity charge, I did not see this noted at time of booking. It should at least be disclosed. $22 tip for each $30 breakfast. -agree with other recent poster on the staff, while nice, they didn’t seem to be that experienced. I brought up the construction and a few of these at checkout. There was no apology, just excuses. If there was even a hint of apology or trying to make some of this right I wouldn’t post such a critical review. Really disappointed. The good things: The bed was comfy The picnic they packed for us was yummy The massages were great

Beautiful property, but not close to worth $665/night — and the billing practices left a bad taste

Beautiful property, but not close to worth $665/night — and the billing practices left a bad taste We came to Mendocino for the music festival and stayed two nights at Brewery Gulch Inn. The setting is lovely, the town was restful, and the design of the property is genuinely nice — Le Labo toiletries in the bathroom were a nice touch, and the included breakfast/dinner concept sounds great on paper. Unfortunately, the execution and the way we were treated didn't come close to matching the price tag. Room and comfort issues The walls and floors are thin — we could hear our upstairs neighbor snoring and their TV running all night. There's no AC and no screens on the windows, so getting fresh air meant letting bugs in. There's no in-room coffee, water, or safe — all available in the lobby, but not in a $665/night room. Construction started at 8:30am right outside our ground-floor window with zero forewarning — loud sawing, and workers who could see directly into our room. Breakfast Several items on the menu were unavailable for all three days we were there: no bread for the French toast, no chilaquiles, and the “fresh squeezed” orange juice was actually concentrate. — we were told they were out of oranges, despite a grocery store carrying them just a few blocks away. The snacks available were dry, tasteless cookies, and a fruit bowl (a couple of apples and bananas) that was never refreshed the entire stay — the bananas were black by checkout. Billing problems When I booked in April, I was quoted a total for both nights including taxes and fees, with a one-night deposit due at booking. Days later, was charged for both nights in full. When I called to sort it out, the front desk staffer (Crystal) responded with irritation rather than an apology, as if refunding an overcharge was a personal inconvenience to her. At checkout, months later, a $44 “food service gratuity” appeared on the bill — for four complimentary breakfasts. When I noted that a hotel charging $665/night should be paying its own staff a living wage rather than passing that cost to guests via a surprise gratuity, I was told “that's what the state mandates,” then asked, in a clearly annoyed tone, “so you don't think our staff deserve to be paid?” I was asked, in a derogatory, snarky way, if I wanted the $44 refunded. I responded "yes, thank you, please reverse the charge" — it was never refunded. Checkout I asked twice about a one-hour late checkout (noon instead of 11am). Both times I was told staff would need to check with a manager and get back to us. No one ever did. We were separately told the fee for that one hour would be $100 — on top of $665/night. Service overall There was no greeting or acknowledgment on arrival — just paperwork to sign. No thank-you or well-wishes at departure — just a bill. The staff throughout felt like well-meaning young people on summer break rather than a trained team, and there was no manager visibly on-site handling any of this. Bottom line This property is fine at $250–$300/night. At $665/night, it's a significant mismatch between price and experience, compounded by billing issues that were never resolved. I wouldn't return, and I'd encourage ownership to take a hard look at training and guest service — “Unreasonable Hospitality” by Will Guidara would be a good place to start.

Total disappointment in every aspect.

This was a huge disappointment since we expected dinner the evening we arrived. What they called a meal was terribly prepared served cold and the excuse for a waiter could not speak or understand word of english. The front desk attendent told me that it was really an appetizer but there was not a real restaurant to provide a proper meal. The toilet seat in our room was broken and the television did not work. Was not worth the cost.

Lovely inn on the beautiful Mendocino coast!

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights at this lovely inn. It was a return visit as we decided to attend one of the concerts at the Mendocino Music Festival, which was fun. The inn had a 3 nights for the price of 2 promotion, so it was a good deal, I think. The setting of the inn is along the beautiful, rugged northern California coast. It has a view of Smuggler's Cove and the ocean across the highway. It is a great location to explore Mendocino, and the coastal locations to the north. We went to the little town of Fort Bragg, the Mendocino Botanical Gardens (which is amazing and has fantastic ocean views), and Pacific Star winery, which also has incredible ocean views. The inn itself is small and intimate. It has a central lounge/dining room and deck where breakfast, the light dinner served in individual boxes for each room, and beer and wine are served. The food was good, and the craftsman decor was perfect for the rustic location. Now, this trip we stayed in the Pine room, which itself was very nice and clean, with nice amenities. However, it is located right next to the lounge/central dining area, and so there was some noise/voices from that. Also on this particular weekend the deck was being expanded, so there was some disruption to the general quiet ambiance from that (but that's temporary and the deck will be nice when larger). And, I would recommend an upstairs room, as there was also some noise from the room above, and I would think the view would be better, too. But, everyone there was very friendly and helpful, and we truly had a wonderful time.

A Slice Of Heaven!

Brewery Gulch Inn & Spa is one of those rare places that slows time down the moment you arrive. Waking up to the panoramic views of the Mendocino coastline, watching the birds glide over the cove with nothing but the sound of the ocean in the background, was an experience I'll remember for a long time. What really sets this place apart, though, is the people. Every member of the staff genuinely cared about making our stay special. The hospitality felt effortless, personal, and authentic—never forced. The food deserves a special mention. The breakfasts were exceptional, made with fresh local ingredients and beautifully prepared, and the evening wine and light dinner service was far beyond what we expected. Every meal felt thoughtful, seasonal, and perfectly suited to the peaceful surroundings. Between the craftsmanship of the inn, the incredible coastal views, the constant wildlife, and the warmth of everyone who works here, Brewery Gulch isn't just somewhere you stay—it's somewhere you experience. If you're looking for a peaceful escape on the Mendocino Coast, this is as close to perfect as it gets. I can't wait to come back.

we have stayed here.....

over the years and knew it had been sold but were unprepared for the difference we felt upon entering..the atmosphere was just not the same, the welcome, the room, the landscaping (many plants had been left to struggle along, no pruning where needed or replanting of those that were dead) all had a feel of neglect ....we immediately went to the deck, our favorite view...chairs and tables had not been cleaned, deck not swept...and plants in planter box were non existent or dead...our room elicited the same unfortunate response, wood on window, door, cabinet needed refinishing, blind didn't work, room had a sterile feel that we had not felt prior...bath amenities were minimal...tired looking 0verall.....yes, it takes a big effort and expense to keep properties up, and that is understood, however, when paying the rather high price for our room, these details are not to be overlooked...we didn't take the bento box, however wines that were served were not expensive which is ok...breakfast they were out of yoghurt and the juice we asked for...breakfast was mediocre. i regret posting this review and only hope it will urge the owners to look closer at this lovely place.......the view and situation of Brewery Gultch is unequaled in the area...

Corporate Takeover

Was once a nice unique B and B has turned into a corporate below average stay. We knew from the start that the traditional New Year's Eve dinner from prior years was no longer when they said they were working on it one day prior. I was on the upper level when I over heard what I think was a vendor throwing F bombs having a conversation with the manager. In the morning, I came downstairs not to find any coffee or clean mugs with condiments available. (cream, sugar, etc.). No warm pastries that was one there in the past. The food was 3 stars as well as the overall service. What was once a five star B and B is no longer. This is not throwing any blame to the staff that was there but to an obvious corporate takeover that likely sacked the previous staff to cut costs and try to profit. Once again not to blame the new staff. They were only doing their best.

One persons view

Nice place. Over rated. Seemed dated. Lacks some amenities you might expect in such a place. Not sure what the small plates a dinner hour are meant to accomplish. Snacks probably make more sense. Just not sure the rating is justified

Short but Sweet

This lodge is just down the road from the village of Mendocino and offers a wonderful bento box with wine pairing food service each evening. The comfortable lodge-style living room features leather armchairs with newspapers, magazines, books, movies and games with giant French doors that lead to an ocean-facing porch. Our bed was super comfortable. We only stayed one night: wish we'd had another day to stay!

Nightmare at Fort Bragg

My girlfriend and I booked two nights at Brewery Goldscheden Spa through Groupon and drove nearly five hours to get there, itinerary planned for the weekend. When we arrived, we were told our reservation did not exist. No apology. No effort to help us find another hotel. No attempt to rebook us. The manager told us she personally is not connected to Groupon, so it was not her problem, despite the fact that the conglomerate that owns this property is the one that listed it on Groupon in the first place. The convenient excuse for why nobody could actually fix this? The regional manager was in the "Bahamas," so apparently no one with authority was available. Another guest had the exact same issue that same day. The womans Isabella or something so definitely watch out. We were essentially told to figure it out ourselves. Rude, dismissive, and zero accountability. If you are looking to stay in the area, the Stanford Inn is 10x nicer and is not staffed by a bunch of exhausted looking, unhelpful, unfriendly people. Go there instead.

Excellent B&B near Mendocino

Beautiful wooded property, convenient to Mendocino and numerous state parks. Large, tasty free breakfast. At 5:30-6:30 they serve a light meal (included), which can be enough for dinner. Friendly, helpful staff.

LOVED IT HERE

Staying here was one of the coolest experiences I have had at a hotel/inn. The rooms are rustic, nothing fancy about them, but they have a lot of charm and are very cozy. The coolest thing about staying here are the 5:30 pm dinner boxes you get every day that you can take outside, sit by the fire, or even stay in your room if you want! The food is excellent and it’s just a fun experience not knowing what you will be trying. Breakfast is so yummy and that is also included in the stay. Once you package in the room, dinner, & breakfast it really is a good deal. Staff was so friendly and the common area space is so cozy. I LOVED IT HERE. The location was convenient to downtown Mendocino , Fort Bragg, Russian Gulch park, Van Damme park, and not too far from wineries. Trails are close and views are beautiful.

Renewed at Brewery Gulch

My husband and I recently went to Mendocino to renew our vows and stayed at the Brewery Gulch Inn & Spa. We thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was great. We especially liked the bento boxes distributed for wine hour. The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing. We are typically always on the go, but we found ourselves finding our way back to the Inn in the afternoons to have coffee and play Scrabble on the table sized board. I highly recommend this place.
