Analog Escapes

What is an analog escape?

An analog escape is a stay in a remote cabin, lodge or inn where you unplug from screens and reconnect with the people you love and with nature, with things like hot tubs, saunas, cold plunges, hiking trails and fire pits instead of TV and Wi-Fi.

It's a place where you forget about your phone. Not because it doesn't work, but because there's something better to do.

Far from the noise

We look for places in the mountains, on a lake or at the end of a long gravel road. The farther a stay is from the nearest big city, the higher it ranks with us. The drive is part of it: by the time you arrive, you've already started to slow down.

Fewer screens

No Wi-Fi, a spotty signal or no TV all count in a place's favor, and places that say so outright count most of all. We don't require it. Plenty of our stays have Wi-Fi. They just give you enough reasons not to use it.

Something better to do

What counts most is what's there when the phone goes away:

Cabins, small inns, lodges, farms and tents rank above hotels. We leave out chain hotels, casinos and water parks, and look twice at ski condos and anything on a busy strip.

Chosen with care

Our scoring reads each listing and suggests the places that fit, and we go through them ourselves. We turn down far more than we list. Rated stays need 4.5 stars or more from guests; a few great new places without enough reviews yet are marked New. The ones we know best are marked Our pick.
